The Client

Product line and strategic marketing leadership within a pharma-focused business unit sought to understand how single use components were displacing durable components in biopharma applications. Leadership wanted an objective, market-based view of where this shift was occurring, how it would evolve over the coming years, and what it meant for the business's core products and future growth.

The challenge

Single use components are gaining ground in biopharma processes, but the pace and pattern of adoption vary by application and segment. The client lacked a fact-based view of where single use was displacing durable components, what was driving the shift, and how quickly it would progress.

It also needed to understand how the structure of the value chain, from biopharma OEMs and CMOs to pump OEMs and systems integrators, would shape its position. Without that clarity, it was difficult to size the opportunity or to know how to protect its core business while pursuing growth.

The solution

The client engaged BCE Consulting to assess where single use components were displacing durable components, how the trend would evolve, and what was driving it, and to size the single use opportunity.

BCE interviewed more than 50 sources across the value chain, focusing on biopharma OEMs, CMOs, CDMOs, pump OEMs, and systems integrators. The feedback was analyzed to develop insights on segmentation, market size and growth, unmet needs and opportunities, and value chain structure, along with the implications for the client's core business and future growth.

The results

BCE identified a number of headwinds for the client's core product line stemming from the value chain structure for single use pumps. BCE also identified several opportunities for new product development and sales initiatives to address these challenges and unlock growth.

The client gained a clearer view of how to defend its core business while capturing growth as single use adoption expands.
