The Client
Division leadership at a publicly traded infrastructure equipment and technology company sought a clear, market-based view of the Smart City landscape. Leadership wanted to define and segment the market, understand which disruptive trends could reshape it, and identify the segments best aligned with the company's business strategy and core competencies.
The challenge
The Smart City market spans a very large and fragmented set of segments, and disruptive trends are changing where value sits.
The client lacked a structured, fact-based way to define the landscape, assess the impact of those disruptions, and judge which segments fit its strategy and capabilities.
Without that clarity, it was difficult to narrow a broad field of opportunities to the few worth pursuing.
The solution
The client engaged BCE Consulting to define and segment the Smart City landscape, identify potential market disruptors, and recommend top segments. BCE collaborated with the client team to define the primary disruptive trends affecting the market and used them to build segment evaluation criteria.
BCE then evaluated more than 100 market segments against these criteria to produce a refined list of seven segments for deep dive analysis and prioritization, viewed through the lens of the client's strategy and core competencies.
The results
BCE identified three multi-segment opportunities that were a strong fit for the client to enter the market inorganically.
The analysis gave division leadership a prioritized, evidence-based view of where to focus and a clear direction for pursuing Smart City growth through acquisition.
