The Client
The strategy team within a major electrical equipment and components business sought a clearer view of the U.S. energy grid capital spending opportunity through 2030. Leadership wanted an objective, market-based assessment of where grid CAPEX would flow, how different buyers make purchasing decisions, and what this meant for its go-to-market strategy and portfolio roadmap.
The challenge
U.S. grid capital spending spans utilities, independent power producers, data center operators, and other buyers, and is spread across a wide range of electrical and software products. Each buyer group evaluates and purchases differently.
The client lacked a product-level view of where the opportunity sat, how it varied by segment and scenario, and how purchase decisions were made. Without that granularity, it was difficult to prioritize customers, identify portfolio gaps, or align its commercial strategy and product roadmap to the highest-value demand.
The solution
The client engaged BCE Consulting to size and classify the U.S. energy grid CAPEX opportunity from 2026 to 2030 down to the electrical and software product level, and to sharpen its go-to-market strategy and portfolio roadmap.
BCE conducted more than 170 primary research interviews with utilities, independent power producers, data center operators, EPCs, and industry analysts, layered with secondary market data. These inputs fed a product-level CAPEX model and a map of purchase decision-making processes by buyer type, spanning utility and non-utility segments. Findings were translated into prioritized opportunities and tailored commercial strategies.
The results
BCE quantified the U.S. grid CAPEX opportunity by segment and scenario, giving the client a clear view of where demand would concentrate. The analysis identified which product categories and customer segments to prioritize and flagged the largest gaps in the client's portfolio.
BCE also defined tailored commercial strategies across utilities, independent power producers, and other buyers, equipping the strategy team to sharpen its go-to-market approach and portfolio roadmap.
